Day job? Surfing and school.

Dream job? I’d like to become a professional surfer and travel the world competing and doing what I love.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What is a day in your shoes like?

I’m from Honolulu, Hawaii. I moved to Hawaii from Florida when I was about 9 years old. A typical day in my shoes starts with a bowl of cereal and a wave check. My two sisters and I decide where the best waves are and that’s usually where we will surf. Sometimes if we have a contest coming up we will go to the break where contest is held. When we’re done surfing in the morning, we’ll get lunch at home or somewhere near the beach. There are some really cool food trucks we get lunch at sometimes and they’re right next to a spot we surf at a lot during the summertime. If we go back out to surf again after lunch, which we almost always do, the sun is usually starting to set by the time we come in. When we all come back in to the beach, we go home and eat dinner together. After dinner, we do our school work and take some classes and then watch a movie with our parents if it isn’t too late.

How long have you been surfing for? How would you describe your relationship to the ocean? How would you describe your local surf community?

I have been surfing for 5 years. I am always learning from the ocean. Every time I come in from surfing I feel like I have learned something new. I also try to respect the ocean because sometimes it can be so calm and then become so powerful. My local surf community cares a lot about the ocean and has a lot of respect for it. I’ve learned that even the small things, like picking up small pieces of trash floating in the water, is a great way to care for and show respect for the ocean.

You have been on fire winning many surf competitions, such as first place in two divisions of NSSA Nationals. How would you describe your competitive surfing experience?

Competitive surfing has definitely been a learning experience for me. I have learned that you’re going to lose a lot more than you’re going to win. When I lose it gives me the opportunity to go back and reflect on my mistakes and try to improve and get better before the next competition comes around.

What motivates you to compete at such a high level?

Bettering my last contest result motivates me to compete. I’m also motivated by watching professional surfing competitions because I know that I want to be as good as them one day. I enjoy knowing all the time and hard work I put into surfing will pay off as a win or a better result in the next competition.

What is your favorite post-surf meal?

I love to eat acai bowls after I surf. There is a really great smoothie bar that is close to one of the spots I surf at often, I think they have the best acai bowls on the island!

What is your favorite board?

My favorite board is my light blue, 9’0” performance longboard that was shaped by Mitsu Matsushita. It is my magic board and I bring it everywhere I travel, like Australia and California. The board is a little beat up, but I feel like I can depend on it in a lot of different conditions.

What are two places on your surfing bucket list?

I would love to go on a surf trip to the Mentawais or the Maldives one day.

Who or what inspires you?

My parents inspire me because they are very hard working. I am also inspired by other athletes, like Carissa Moore, because she has such a great attitude in the water and she is an amazing, powerful surfer.
